A Leave of Absence

Sorry folks, but once again some of us at the People’s Informative Collective have to take a break. One of us is moving to a different state this week, and another’s hands keep falling off.

“But aren’t there more than two of you?” Well of course there are! We just wanted to let you, our loyal readers, know why you may notice the absence of some of your favorite regular columns!

So until everything is un-boxed and we have complete control of our Phalanges, please excuse the disruption.

Solidarity and peace!

We need artists to help collaberate on creating posters, and other projects later down the line.
What kind of posters? In short anti-capitalist and social issues.
We also would appreciate any ideas for posters you have.

People’s Informative Collective: Who We Are, What We Hope to Accomplish

A long time in the making, and possibly to late to be truly useful, the following are our proposed mission, ideals, and goals.

Anarchism is arguably one of the oldest human political philosophies. Long before the rise of the Roman, Byzantine, British, or American empires, people were controlling their own lives, communities, and futures. While it’s prevalence has faded anarchism is still very much alive, and just as important as it was to our oldest ancestors.

However while the basic ideas of anarchism has never changed, anarchists have. Once representing the entirety of humanity, even more recently large swaths of people from every imaginable walk of life, anarchism was a philosophy without race lines, class lines, or gender lines. However as it is often (and rightly) pointed out, today’s American anarchist community is nearly homogeneous. We are nearly universally white, we are nearly universally from the middle class, and we are almost all under the age of thirty. What is it that causes this, and how can it’s obvious limitations be pushed back to return anarchism to its former position at the forefront of the human community?

First and foremost we must throw open our doors, and accept in any and all who wish to learn of us and join us. There are many people who would likely join our cause and advocate for the anarchist cause, yet have not done so. It is likely that our cliquish, in-group attitude is partially to blame for this. To often we rely on jargon, security culture, and established circles to achieve our ends. Yet a movement so limited cannot grow. While security culture has it’s place, we must also be aware of the fact that it is simply a deterent when used to zealously at the basic, entry levels of our community.

As such, we of the People’s Informative Collective (PIC) will endeavor to provide what has been lacking for so long in our community. A basic, outsider friendly insight into the workings, thoughts, and goings ons within our community.

To the seasoned anti-authoritarian we hope to become a resource for new faces, ideas, and organizing. To this end we will post any action that comes to our attention that is open to the public and supportive of the anarchist cause, will promote groups, artists, and movements we feel are seeking similar ends to the anarchist cause.

To the young anarchist, either in age or in experience with our community, we hope to be an open place to find answers and explanations of some of our more idiosyncratic habits, as well as providing resources for networking with other anarchists.

And to the general public, those who are yet only familiar with the masked villains society paints us to be, we hope to show that our demands are not insane, our methods are not cruel, and our dreams are no more deranged than their own.

Please, if you are interested in contacting, joining, or submitting something to the PIC, contact us at peoplesinformative@riseup.net. While we have yet to draft an official editorial policy or membership requirements, I assure you that no one will be turned away unless their intentions crassly violate our core beliefs.

Hello loyal readers! After a lovely hiatus the People’s Informative Collective will be back up and running shortly! We appologize in advance for any missed regular columns this week, but please be understanding, we just got back from vacation!

Anyway, while you wait for new things, how about you check out THIS.

Spring Break!

We at the People’s Informative Collective regret to inform our loyal readers that we are going on vacation.

Ok, well we aren’t all going on vaction.  One of us is.  And one of us still can’t use the computer.  And the remaining “staff” likes the idea of a break so here we are.  Even anarchists need a holiday.

In the meantime, check out protest.net for your activism needs.  Protest, rallies, vigils, and all sorts of fun things are listed there, so surely you should be able to find something to keep you busy!

So, unless some sort of monumentous event happens that we need to tell you about, we will be out of the office from today, March 28th, until April 5th.

If you would like to man the fort while we are gone, please feel free to contact us.  Or if there is something you would like to see published we can work something out.  Or if you want to discuss late Rennisiance art, that is cool too.

Peace!

Ok, so we aren’t really hiring, BUT we are inviting anyone interested in writing for us to please contact us, submit an article, or just drop us a line saying “hey, PIC, you guys rule!”

One of our members will be away for some time, and as such will not be able to write for awhile. In order to maintain the same high level of content you can expect from us here at the PIC, we need a replacement. All interested parties who are interested in writing for an up and coming anarchist blog are more than welcome to contact us.

Peace!

Propaganda of the Seed

“Propaganda of the Seed” is at it’s most basic a play on the historic anarchist tactic of propaganda of the deed. Based on the idea that violence against political enemies would catalyze a rising of the masses leading to, presumably the abolishment of both private property and state power. Examples of propaganda of the deed are numerous, some so significant that this author is uncomfortable listing them as it may draw unwanted attention from the Secret Service.

For various reasons, not least of which is the rise of pacifism in the anarchist movement, propaganda of the deed has fallen to the wayside along with the general strike and countless other tactics now considered to reckless, violent, or futile be considered realistically. However the notion that ideas can spawn revolution is still very much alive. With this in mind, the People’s Informative Collective is proud to introduce our first regular column: Propaganda of the Seed. A relatively new phrase, popularized by the anarchist download site One Big Torrent, propaganda of the seed started out as a pun utilizing the BitTorrent protocol roll of “seeder” and the tactic as discussed above. However here at the People’s Informative, we will be taking things one step further.

We are all aware of the power contained within a single seed. The tiny acorn growns over time into the mighty oak, and anyone who has walked down a sidewalk of any age is familair with just a sliver of the change that seed produces in the world around it.  Just as that acorn grows to crack the sidewalk, shade the street, and beautify it’s surroundings, we hope that our Propaganda of the Seed column will help us progress twords a freer and more healthful future.

So what will our “Propaganda of the Seed” articles be about?  Small things anyone can do to help themselves live indipendent of the limitations of materialism and capitalism, things people can do to spread anarchist thought and theory, or just things to help us tolerate the tedious fact that we live in a (currently) capitalist world.  While these acts, ideas, and objects may seem simple and insignificant, given enough time they can grow to reshape the world.

So stay tuned, we will try and make this a regular column, multiple articles a week, eventually locking into some sort of schedule.
