Anonymous Waging Cyber Warfare Against Enemys of WikiLeaks! by jpo

Disclaimer: We of the people’s informative collective would never advocate our loyal readers ever do something so impolite as to use what tools they have available to them to bring certain economic and corporate powerhouses Internet homes crashing down around them like so many Palestinian settlements.  By no means should you download LOIC, install it, and seek retribution against those who have turned on WikiLeaks

I don’t know much yet so far, but here is what I do know-

Legendary voice of freedom and awesome, Anonymous, has launced a DDoS campaign against a number of groups that have either turned their back on or played a part in the downfall of WikiLeaks.  To facilitate this they have launched the Low Orbital Ion Cannon, a software which allows users to tune in to the Hive Mind and let their digital slaves do the work for them.

Stay tuned to this frequency for more information as the war continues.

Happy Guy Fawkes Night! by jpo

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
The gunpowder treason and plot,
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

That’s right folks! Tonight is the night we commemorate the attempt to blow up the British Parliament. How do we do we celebrate such a joyous occasion you ask? The British light bonfires and burn effigies of “arch-villain” Guido “Guy” Fawkes. But that isn’t the only action inspired by Guy’s deeds.

Before it was a frankly enjoyable film, V for Vendetta was a graphic novel by none other than Alan Moore, the man also behind Watchmen. While the Hollywood version was scrubbed of any political significance, the original is a moving read about coming to the realization that the only limits to personal power are the ones you set for yourself. Still waiting for your Evey-in-the-rain moment? Well, maybe this will help.

Propaganda of the Seed Vol. 1 by jpo

In case you missed it – here are our first ten Propaganda of the Seed Articles.

Prologue
: An explanation of what we mean when we say “Propaganda of the Seed” and why we think it is important.

1:Support the Alternative Media Project. The group behind InfoShop, OpenWiki, and hosting the Anarchist FAQ. They needed a new computer then, now they just need help paying the bills.

2: Open Source Software. Free as in spech as well as free as in beer, Open Source Software is a good pick for activists for a number of reasons.

3. Fighting for Our Lives. CrimethInc. will send you free stuff! Great for organizing, education, or to start a mini-infoshop!

4. BitTorrent Activism. Not just for porn and music anymore, bittorrents provide a wealth of resources for anarchist or learning about anarchism.

5. Radical Cash. Want a free way to get hundreds of people to see your message, website, or art? Break out your wallet.

6. A Political Party for Anarchists? Well . . . sort of! Hang out, have a good time, and stick it to the man!

7. My (Autonomous) Space. Admit it. You already spend too much time on Facebook. Might as well do something “constructive” with your time!

8. Googlewashing. Ideal for big groups, Googlewashing lets you control the media. Sort of.

9. BookMooch. Useful both as a source for radical literature, and as a viable alternative to capitalism.

10. KnowMore. Odds are you are going to buy that computer anyway. Might as well buy it from the nice(er) guys.

Thanks for reading! Let us know at peoplesinformative@riseup.net if you have any ideas for things people can do in their daily lives to live more free or help the anarchist movement.

The Coming Insurrection by jpo

With alleged ties to the Tarnac 9, “The Coming Insurrection” advocates violence and riots to bring down the status quo and release the world into an anarchist state. They assert that once such a condition is reached, the world will naturally reform into global communist.

A little grandiose maybe, but what great ideas aren’t? Released in the US a few weeks ago, it’s words have inspired people to, if not smash the state, at least challenge people’s complacency. Want to organize your own reading? LINK. Don’t speak French? LINK.

The Coup’s Boots Riley on Obama, Rage Against the Machine, and Street Sweepers by jpo

The Coup, formerly a Bay Area rap group that is to P-Funk what dead prez is to N.W.A.: Louder, bigger, and more political. I have been a huge fan of theirs since I first laid ears on “Pick a Bigger Weapon” and every new track only deepens my respect for them. (In fact seeing them live in California is one of the highlights of my concert-going career.)

The Coup are expressly socialist, but as we have said countless times here before, we are looking to build anti-capitalist solidarity here, so we won’t hold that against them. Unlike a number of other “political” rappers (I am looking at you Nas) The Coup keep their message front and center, and even on arguably “apolitical” tracks you can still hear their point of view being tilted into the red, instead of just showing up on one track every two albums to “keep it real”.

Sadly though, The Coup have been falling apart of late, E-Roc left in ’96 and DJ Pam the Funkstress only recently has started stepping back from the wheels of steel to focus on her catering business. Though it is sad to see such a talented, and obviously close, hip hop group fade away, we can take solace in the fact that out of the rubble a new sound is already forming.

Street Sweeper Social Club, featuring The Coup’s Boots Riley on the mic, and Rage Against the Machine’s less crazy driving force Tom Morello on guitar, dropped their self titled debut on June 16. Look for it at your nearest independent record store, boost it out of Wal*Mart, or seek alternate sources.

In closing, here is an excerpt of an interview Boots did with Hip Hop supersite Okayplayer:

OKP: Oh shit… well, now that Obama’s president, does that kill the socialist movement? Are people quelled?

Boots: Let me say, Obama’s in office but we still got people unemployed. We got a lot of people working 40 hour a week jobs, who have to live on their cousin’s couch because it don’t pay enough. We got the same wars going on, one of them we’re about to send more troops to. We’re encroaching into Pakistan. The people who robbed mortgages, these financiers, are making out with all of the bailout money; people that we owe the national debt to, we’re giving them money and for the first time ever, and saying you don’t have to reduce the national debt. So I don’t think it kills the idea that the people need control of the wealth that they create. I think what it does do is make a lot of people say let’s wait and see what he does.

Good shit, eh? Full story.

Songs from Under the Sink – Mischief Brew by jpo

My apologies for another late music review, however my intended source for this week is experiencing some technical difficulties.

Hailing from Philadelphia‘s admirable anarchist community, Mischief Brew is an end product of what started out as folk-punk powerhouse Erik Petersen’s solo work.

While three years old, the fact that “Songs from Under the Sink” is not only still worth listening to but actually pleasurable is a testament to the craftsmanship of the group as well as Erik’s skills as a songwriter. Also impressive is the fact that from either a folk background, or punk, every track on this album is something you can relate to. Personally, every time I listen to this album I change my mind as to whether it is fairly categorized as folk-punk or punk-folk.

The opening track, Thanks, Bastards! is that staple of any anarcho-punk setlist, the police brutality song, actually fails to be predictable. Rather than the trite “Cops suck, boo police yay skateboarding!” tone that many of these songs take, Mischief Brew instead engages the listener to contemplate the real life changing power the police have. Suffice to say that Petersen is of the opinion that the tighter the pigs make their fists, the more people come pouring out of the system desperate for a change.

“Save a City …” is a song about community organizing against gentrification,
“Coffee, God, and Cigarettes” is a tongue-in-cheek piece about addiction, and “Children Play with Matches” addresses the silly idea that we of all people can teach children anything of value.

A song which is personally significant is “Gratitude and Thanks”. Addressing the significance of those “who had the courage to reach and rise and stand” to modern activism. While it is easy to dismiss the radical campus culture of the 60′s as failed and soulless (ever since it’s been commercialized) we can’t forget that we owe much of our resources today to their hard work and determination.

New Wave – Against Me! by jpo

Against Me!‘s newest release, New Wave, is an interesting point in several histories, punk music, anarchist culture, as well as rock at large, just to name a few. Coming out of the early stage of the band’s signing to Sire Records, a wholly owned subsidiary of corporate monolith AOL-Time Warner, New Wave was welcomed into a world of controversy. AM! had been accused by a number of hard(er) core fans of selling out since the band started to achieve some level of commercial significance. Looking at their older material it is easy to see why.

Here we have an example of early AM!, Walking Is Still Honest off of their first demo Vivada Vis!

And now one of their later peices, “Don’t Lose Touch”. For some context: this video played on MTV.

Don’t lose touch indeed.

The contrast between the early material and late material may seem sufficient reason to worry about this album. But you consider that this band, signed to a label owned by media conglomerate Time Warner, once released the following song you really begin to wonder what is going on.

Against Me! is clearly a mystery wrapped in an enigma. But what of the music! This is supposed to be an album review, not a critical assessment of AM!’s “sellout” status”. Well fear not, loyal readers, for New Wave abounds with sounds!

Opening with the title track, the album takes a more introspective and thoughtful path than long time fans of Against Me! will expect. However this isn’t a personal introspective, or even about the four memebrs of the band. If we keep in mind that to this day the members of Against Me! still identify as anarchists, we can see that the band is raising some valid questions about our attitudes as a community, in fact challenging “true” anarchist, who have historically been quick to criticize AM!, to disagree with what they are doing. A lyrical excerpt:

We can control the medium.
We can control the context of presentation.
Is there anybody on the receiving end?
Reaching out for some kind of connection.

We can be the bands we want to hear.
We can define our own generation.
Is there anybody on the receiving end?
Are you ready to brave new directions.

Well then. If we keep this message in mind, this idea that rather than complaining about the state of modern contemporary music we should fix it, that is an absolute breath of fresh air for the anarchist movement. After “New Wave” challenges us to do rather than say, “Thrash Unreal” offers intelligent discussion on the modern perception of the good life, and “White People for Peace” questions both the sincerity and the tactics of the disgraceful remnants of the anti-war movement in this country.

With this in mind, I say openly and with complete sincerity, as an anarchist I am a fan of New Wave. The album expands our horizons, offers constructive criticism, and much like “12 Crass Songs” could serve as a gateway album leading those with “pedestrian” politics to objectively consider anarchism for the first time.

That said, I am not going to give AM! a pass on being sellouts. Last time I saw them live they didn’t even play “Baby, I’m an Anarchist”. Tom I know your art is important to you and it shows. I also understand that playing the same damn song night after night can get tiring. But it is THE Against Me! song. Seeing you live without hearing “Baby, I’m an Anarchist” is like seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd without hearing “Free Bird”. Suck it up and play for the fans!

(And yes, that was weak)

Propaganda of the Seed 4: Seed Propaganda! by jpo

One factor that limits the growth of the anarchist community is the scarcity of our media in mainstream outlets. Sure you can find Noam Chomsky, but that which is truly radical is often left to the network of infoshops across this country to distribute. I am not attempting to discourage those who run infoshops, in fact I feel that without infoshops our anarchist culture would be far less in so many different ways, it doesn’t even bear consideration.

However to the outside infoshops can seem intimidating. For this reason it could be desirable to have information available in other areas, so that it will be accessible to those who wouldn’t normally enter an infoshop.

We have already discussed using free literature left in public areas to spread anarchist ideals, however this method does have some short comings, as it relies on curiosity for success rather than pure interest in the ideas of anarchy.

One way to provide information to these people is though long time friend of the PIC, BitTorrent protocol.

By downloading and seeding anarchist materials, you not only are getting the materials yourself, you are making them more easily available to others and thus making it more likely that the information will come into the hands of those who need it the most.

While the diversity of anarchist material means there is something for everyone in every niche culture, here are some broad spectrum materials to get you started:

  • Nearly everything in our Download category offers something to download and share.
  • Occupation 101: A documentary on the Israeli-Palestine Conflict
  • The End of America: While it is regrettable that Naomi Wolf is a fan of statist wood-elf Ron Paul, this film focuses on the deterioration of civil liberties and democracy, as well as eerie parallels between modern America and historic dictatorships.
  • E-Book Collection of the works of Marx and Engles.  Valuable if only for the insight into the theories of our anti-capitalist brothers.
  • OneBigTorrent.org: Specializing in downloads that would be of interest to the anarchist community, OneBigTorrent has something for the activist in everyone.

How to Surf (More) Anonymously by jpo

Disclaimer: We would NEVER encourage people to anything so dangerous as attempt to prevent our corporate overlords from seeing what we do on the Internet. Internet surveillance is there for our protection, because if people were given free access to information, who knows what could happen! The People’s Informative Collective will not be held accountable for any damages, prison terms, or personal injuries sustained while following these instructions. Honestly didn’t your momma teach you any better than this?

The fact is that whatever you look at on the Internet is watching you back. Don’t believe me? If you are using the Firefox web browser, install the add-on Ghostery. This simple add-on keeps track of what web bugs are following you around as you surf the web. Usually tied to advertising sites, these bugs use bandwidth, and are often used to gather information about you which is sold to third party companies to make advertisements more effective.

Some people may not be bothered by this, but I am sure some of you are. Furthermore if corporations, who are theoretically limited by the Constitution, are following you, who else is? Surely to some extent this is just being a little paranoid, but if you don’t like the idea of people watching what you are doing in the privacy of your own home, then you have a few options to limit what information these web bugs can gather, as well as occasionally shut them out entirely.

At this point I would like to apologize for the Firefox-centric turn this how to is about to take. This simple fact is that Internet Explorer is the product of one of the corporations that employs web bugs, so they aren’t about to make it easy to block them. If anyone knows of a way to block web bugs in IE, please let us know so we can share with the community. Otherwise if you are looking to block these spies, you need to be using Firefox (or if you are using Linux, the FOSS alternative IceCat).

As stated above, the Ghostery add-on will alert you when you are being watched, however it will not enable you to take action against these web bugs. In order to do that you need some sort of blocking program, and for the sake of this demonstration we will be using AdBlock Plus. Long time readers will remember that we already advocated it as a means of downplaying the rampant consumerism on the Internet, and it does that job quite well, but it can also be used for our needs here as well.

Once you have installed AdBlock Plus, you have two options. The easiest, but least effective, method is to subscribe to one of the automatic filters AbBlock supports. Subscribing the the “EasyPrivacy” list will block about half of the bugs you encounter in everyday browsing, but some of the more resilient will remain. The most aggressive choice is to go about your browsing as usual, and when Ghostery alerts you to a bug, search the blockable items in AdBlock and block the appropriate scripts.

I know these directions aren’t the clearest thing in the world, but these programs are easy to use with a little patience and trial and error.

Who’s a Terrorist? Probably You by Dan Clore by jpo

via Infoshop News

“We melt you with acid rain / Keep you poor for economic gain / Convince you your biggest threat / Is drugs and terrorists.”

Jello Biafra with NoMeansNo, “Bruce’s Diary”

Terrorism means the use of violence or the threat of violence against civilians (non-combatants) for political ends. To identify terrorists, therefore, one would logically look for evidence that such acts have been committed and attempt to identify the perpetrators.

However, much in the same manner that law-enforcement profiles consider African Americans likely drug dealers, a new Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC) report profiles militia members as likely terrorists, and in turn gives signs to help identify militia members that include support for Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party, the Constitution Party (mistakenly called the Constitutional Party in the report), the Campaign for Liberty, opposition to the UN, IRS, CIA, FBI, etc., and displaying symbols associated with the American Revolution such as the famous “Don’t Tread On Me” flag.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Other MIAC reports target white supremacists, black separatists, and anarchists.

Meanwhile, reports produced by other “fusion centers” enlarge the field of likely terrorists. A report issued by the North Central Texas Fusion System identified organizations and individuals that have supposedly turned public support toward terrorism, including CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations), ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), IAC (International Action Center, headed by former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark,) and Cynthia McKinney, former US Congressmember and Green Party candidate for president.

And then there’s the Virginia Fusion Center’s report, “2009 Virginia Terrorism Threat Assessment“. You know things are getting off to a bad start when you see the center’s symbol bearing the motto SCIENTA EST POTENTIA. That would mean “knowledge is power”, if they hadn’t misspelled the Latin word scientia.

This report has garnered little public attention other than criticism of its characterization of colleges, including what it calls “Historically Black Colleges”, as important centers of ideological “radicalization” and thus breeding grounds for terrorists.

The Virginia report gives an area by area breakdown of terrorist/extremist (note the shift from terrorism to simple political dissidence) group presence and activity along with entries for various groups of likely terrorists, also noting “intelligence gaps” — a term very difficult to mention without adding an ironic comment.

Concerning “Anarchist Extremists” we learn that: “Anarchist extremists adhere to the anti-government movement which rejects governmental rule and police authority and advocates violent means to overthrow social, political, and economic hierarchies.” and that “Although the anarchist threat to Virginia is assessed as low, these individuals view the government as unnecessary, which could lead to threats or attacks against government figures or establishments.”

The report describes various anarchist groups, such as the Garbage Liberation Front, whose terrorist activities seem to bear a remarkable resemblance to dumpster diving. Another group profiled is Anonymous, who protest against the Church of Scientology. It also includes a motley assortment of Islamists, white supremacists, black nationalists, and many environmentalist and animal-rights groups, such as Earth First! (with the exclamation point usually omitted), ELF (Earth Liberation Front), ALF (Animal Liberation Front), and SHAC (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty).

In the report’s “projections” we find the following: “Current calls for vandalism, boycotts, and other ‘direct action’ by environmental extremists such as Blue Ridge Earth First[!] against financial institutions in Virginia deemed to be supporting environmental degradation are likely to continue.”

And so merely failing to patronize certain businesses seems to have become an act of terrorism. Some people are easily frightened–

Update: After complaints from Paul, Barr, Baldwin, and many others, the MIAC has apologized for and retracted its report on militias. Other mischaracterizations of peaceful political dissidents and activists will most likely require a similar public outcry before the government takes any action to atone for labeling them likely terrorists.
